Today I thought I'd make a few remarks about raising children....

This is me shaking Doug McClure's hand after I'd sold a number of his pieces of beautiful art. Doug shared with me a bit about how he grew up; his problem with alcohol and drugs. He realized that his 'fame' hadn't been always a blessing. He told me when things come 'too easy', they often aren't appreciated. If you've got a youngster who's doing nothing but watching t.v.; playing video games - chatting on the phone and I-net, you really don't have a child that's learning much - or doing much. The best thing you can do is have that child learn to work; keep his/her room clean and tidy like you do your home. This child needs to have chores; discipline - with lots of hugs and love. This child will one day have to earn a living; in order to hold that job, they must be not only qualified and educated, but well disciplined as young children. When a puppy is tiny, it's easy to ignore the 'training', but if you don't, it's a lot harder to manage that BIG dog when he's still tearing up your socks! You can teach when the child is tiny in size; big in absorbing what is all around him in his/her life. A cute calendar that you can make on your computer is a great way to start. Fill it in as you do yours. Have the child do daily chores regularly. Giving out awards of hugs; a little treat - a visit to a place you think would be fun, can be the reward (just like your paycheck). Put a quarter in that piggy bank; an extra one, when the child does what he's supposed to do. When he's naughty, have that child sit down and write out what he did wrong. Have that child then read it - quietly in his room. Put some soft music on to keep the child relaxed. After writing his words; then having to sit in his room for 1/2 hour listening to music, have him come out and TALK to you about what happened. Let him tell you 'his/her' side - listen to their reasoning. They might teach you something at the same time; it's all about talking - sharing; helping, and being responsible. At the bottom of this blog, is a slide-show of my grown children; my grand-kids, and one of my great grand-children. All are healthy; responsible - and growing beautifully. I believe I'm old enough to make these suggestions and remarks. Diane

When we were kids, we'd climb up on an old flat steamer trunk and put on plays for our family. We'd sing; we'd act out little stories we read in our books.

This same small town where I spent many years, still does that same thing - just on a bigger scale.

Big or small - think about having your kids 'act' - and invite your family for the event; complete with a picnic or an easy buffet of cold-cuts; fresh fruit, and veggies!

This lady puts some of her art in the category of 'Zen' - she uses a wide brush - few strokes; makes lovely illustrations in probably 30 minutes or less.

When I do this, I buy the sponge brushes used for painting your home. There are a variety of widths; I bought a 3" wide
set of 3 for $1.00 at Wal-mart.

Cards stock is easily available; use poster paints for the children.

Go outside - a picnic table for painting and
for a super lunch at home that mom makes!
